Motion Detection
Our cameras use an industry-standard passive infrared (PIR) motion sensor, which will detect motion based on heat, then take a picture 0.4 seconds afterwards. Our cameras will detect people and large animal motion at approximately 65’ if the outdoor temperature is 80° F or less. They will detect vehicles much farther than this. However, on a warm day, the heat signature of the animal/person doesn’t stand out as much as it does on a cold day, so the camera will not detect motion as far. The camera detects motion best when the motion is side to side, instead of directly approaching the camera. Ideal mounting height is 3-4 feet above the ground.
Wireless Transfer
After taking a picture, the camera will then send that picture to your phone, which usually takes 10-20 seconds for Y2 and 30-60 seconds for previous camera models. After the picture gets sent, the camera will begin looking for more motion. If you’re in multishot or video mode, the transmission and recovery time will be slower.
Passive infrared technology is great because it is very energy-efficient. However, it is not perfect and you will not get a picture of every person or deer that walks past your camera. If 100% detection is critical for your application, then we recommend a solution like Verkada.
